The author describes how attending their first powwow at age 15 and subsequently working at the San Diego American Indian Health Youth Center shaped their cultural identity and understanding of their Native roots. Over six years working at the Youth Center, the author learned about Native traditions, spirituality, stories, crafts and respect for sacred items like sage. The experience helped the author transition from youth to adulthood and find a sense of community and identity as a Native person. They now work as a part-time youth counselor at the Center to pass on these important cultural teachings.
