Rick wakes from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies. He returns home but finds his house empty. He is taken in by Morgan and his son. They tell Rick about the outbreak and suggest going to Atlanta for safety. In Atlanta, Rick is reunited with his wife Lori, son Carl, and friend Shane. They join a survivor group led by Glenn. By the end of the season, Rick and his new group discover the military center is abandoning the area and must find a new place to stay.
