The Battle of the Wilderness took place from May 5-7, 1864 in Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia between the 102,000-strong Union Army of the Potomac led by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the 61,000-strong Confederate Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee.
