Theo Jansen was born in 1948 in Scheveningen, Netherlands and studied applied physics in university before leaving his studies in 1975 to become an artist. He has created large skeletal sculptures out of recycled plastic that move via wind power through a mixture of pistons and bicycle pumps, with the goal of letting them roam freely on beaches. The sculptures, called "The Beast", were created at his lab in Ypenburg.
