Theseus volunteers to slay the Minotaur, a monster half man and half bull imprisoned in King Minos' labyrinth in Crete. Theseus' father is reluctant to let him go but agrees. Theseus slays the Minotaur with the help of a sword and ball of thread given to him by King Minos' daughter Ariadne, who has fallen in love with him. However, Theseus abandons Ariadne after leaving the labyrinth. Due to a mistake, his father believes Theseus has died at sea, causing him to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff, giving the sea its name.
