CPF-247 is a mid-maturing sugarcane variety released in 2011 that is attractive to growers for its high yields and ability to withstand unfavorable weather. At Ramzan Sugarcane Development Farm, red rot symptoms were discovered in CPF-247 stalks during a field visit, which was surprising since the variety was not thought to be susceptible. Samples were taken to experts at Ayub Agriculture Research Institute who confirmed it was red rot, even though it had never previously been seen in CPF-247, which only received approval four years ago. This discovery of red rot in CPF-247 is alarming for growers and the sugar industry since it threatens further propagation of this variety.

- 1. Ramzan Sugarcane Development Farm Chiniot Threat in Variety CPF-247 Sugarcanevariety CPF-247 was released in July 2011 by Ayub AgricultureResearch InstituteFaisalabad for all Punjab. This is mid maturing variety and as per periodic analysis report (Ratoon), its recovery in October remains 8.36, in December 9.99, in January 10.92, in February 11.48 and in March 12.08 and itsoverallaverage remains up to 10.55 Grower’s attraction remained due to its non-lodging behavior even in unfavorableweather conditions and two to three ratoons can easily be obtained by growers in all Punjab In Ramzan SugarcaneDevelopment Farm its area is about 35 acre in which 22 acre was freshly sown in September 2015 During field visitchecking in last week, it was observed that somecane stalk in variety CPF-247 has becomedried and leaves dryness can easily be seen and identified by seeing whole crop When dissection was made of dry cane, it was astonished to see the symptoms of Red Rot in CPF-247 variety After taking observation immediate contact was made with the expert of Ayub Agriculture Research Institute Faisalabad and they werenot ready nor hear about Red Rot symptoms in variety CPF-247

Later on samples of dry cane were collected fromMuhammadi-2 Farmof Ramzan SugarcaneDevelopment Farmfor Laboratory test as well as for checking to expert of Ayub AgricultureResearch InstituteFaisalabad. Dr.Muhammad Afzalsugarcanespecialist along with his team keenly examined and tested the samples and all the team members after consultation declared these symptoms as RED ROT in variety CPF-247 and as per their statement previously not such symptoms has been seen in this variety Note: This variety approvaltime is not more than 4 years and Red Rot is appearing vastly and this is alarming situation for growers and severs threatfor sugar industry to take necessary precautionary measures for further propagation of variety CPF-247 in their respective feeding zone area in next February sowing Moreover cane control Board should take immediate action and solution for its control and further advice regarding Red Rot symptoms in variety CPF-247 Rana Maqsood Ahmad AGM (Farm) RSDF Chiniot
