Calculating Maximum
Velocity
 Timmy is at a beach, and is being carried by a
oscillating wave in the form
 Timmy’s father deduces that he is oscillating
at a frequency of 3.0 hz.
 A coastguard 200m away tells Timmy that
his vision changes 6.7 degrees when Timmy
moves from his lowest point to his highest
point.
6.7
Determine Timmy’s Maxiumum Velocity.
 First, we must find Timmy’s angular
frequency (w). When given the frequency, this
is simple.
3.0 hz w=(2)(pi)(3)=6pi
 Next we must find Timmy’s amplitude. This
can be found by using the coastguards
information and some simple trigonometry.
200
6.7
2A
Opp = Tan x Adj
2A = Tan(6.7) x (200)
2A =23.4946…
A = 11.7
We must remark that the
coastguard gave Timmy the angle
between his lowest and highest
point. Amplitude is the distance
from the mid-point to the
highest/lowest point, so we must
divide this value by 2.
 Max velocity = (w)(A)
Max velocity = (6pi)(11.7)
Max velocity = 221 m/s
