Tobago is a small island northeast of Trinidad with a population of about 500,000, most of whom are descendants of African slaves brought to work the sugar plantations in the 17th century. Considered one of the jewels of the Caribbean, Tobago has unspoiled tropical rainforests and a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Its white sandy beaches and blue waters provide opportunities for relaxation as well as adventures like surfing, scuba diving, and kayaking, and attractions include the famous Nylon Pool and one of the largest barrier reefs in the world.
