Thomas Ruth provides a recommendation letter for Cynthia Summerfield. He worked with Summerfield from 2003 to 2006 on trademark development projects at Pfizer. Ruth says that Summerfield brought efficiency, initiative, and a business perspective to their collaboration. She ensured legal work was completed accurately and quickly. Summerfield also looked for ways to make desirable name candidates legally viable and contributed beyond her legal responsibilities. For example, she helped identify variations to avoid legal obstacles. Summerfield identified a process change that reduced project timelines by a year, saving the company millions of dollars. Ruth highly recommends Summerfield for her legal work and ability to manage staff.

Trademark Development

To Whom It May Concern:
I am responsible for developing brand names/trademarks for all Pfizers human health prescription
pharmaceuticals. I work closely with our Trademark Legal colleagues to accomplish this, since legal
processing is not only critical to our ability to own a name, but it also represents the most time consuming part
of the process.
I worked with Cynthia Summerfield on trademark development projects from 2003-2006. Ms. Summerfield
brought much value to our collaboration, including efficient and effective legal work, a high energy level, a
business perspective, ability to take initiative, positive attitude, and big picture perspective. When I was
working with her, I was confident that the legal searching, consents, investigations and registration filings were
going to be completed accurately, in the minimum time, with acceptable risk. Her opinions and work in
general reflected an understanding of our business goals, and she looked for ways to make desirable name
candidates legally viable.
Similarly, when I worked with attorneys under her supervision, their work and attitude reflected that of their
leader.
Frequently Ms. Summerfield and her direct reports would contribute to projects beyond their legal
responsibilities. One small example: if she identified a legal obstacle with a name candidate she would help
create variations to avoid that obstacle.
One example of her big picture perspective: not long after joining Pfizer Ms. Summerfield identified and
sold to her group a change in the legal searching processes used for trademark development projects which
reduced total project time by one year from 3.5-4 years to 2.5-3 years. This has resulted in savings to the
company in the millions of dollars, since it eliminated legal searching and registration costs on each project,
and also allowed us to start projects 1 year later, when more is known about the compounds themselves and
fewer naming projects are started on eventual failures.
From my experience on the business side of legal IP work, I can recommend Ms. Summerfield highly, for the
specific legal work, and for her ability to manage and lead professional staff.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Ruth
