Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin increased conflict between the North and South over abolition. Jefferson Davis was president of the Confederate states during the Civil War after graduating from West Point and advocating states' rights. Robert E. Lee was a general for the Confederate army who was considered one of the most skilled generals but ultimately the South lost the war.
