The document discusses reasons for overeating and potential solutions. It explains that while the purpose of food is to provide energy and nutrients, people often eat for taste, social reasons, hunger, boredom, and stress. Overeating can result from insulin resistance, stress, an activated brain reward system, and misinterpreting body signals. A proposed solution is to remember the true purpose of food, practice interoception to better recognize fullness signals, and maintain balance.

INTRODUCTION:
4. Food role as per science:
To provide energy to the body
To provide nutrients to body organs to
function properly
Why do we eat food in reality:
Taste,
Social Networking,
Hunger,
Boredom,
Stress
PURPOSE OF FOOD
5. Insulin: Gets the bodys main fuel glucose
out of the bloodstream and into the cells to
cells to provide energy.
Ghrelin (hunger hormone): Released by the
stomach when the stomach is empty,
Leptin: tells the brain to stop eating and
start burning calories.
Hypothalamus: Keeps the body in balance
(homeostasis)
HUNGER PHENOMENON BRIEF
6. Insulin Resistance: People who are insulin resistant may lose that satiety effect, which leads to
overeating.
Stress: In immediate short-term stressful situations, levels of epinephrine (adrenaline) rise,
putting the body into fight-or-flight mode and dampening appetite. But if stress continues,
stress continues, another hormone, called cortisol, is released. Cortisol increases appetite.
increases appetite.
Brain Reward System: If eating any particular foods makes us feel good, we are more likely to
want more. While from an evolutionary standpoint this may have helped us remember where the
remember where the food was available or motivated us to hunt, in todays environment of
environment of easily-accessible food, it could be leading to overeating.
Misinterpretation of Body Signals: Large portions, large variety of foods (think buffet), thrust,
distraction and boredom.
