Type on Screens: What to Consider and Why - Toshi Omagari, Monotype City University London
?
This document discusses best practices for using fonts on screens. It notes that screen typography is still evolving and font rendering can vary across platforms and devices. Different formats and licenses may be required for web fonts versus embedded fonts. When rendering fonts on screens, rasterizers convert vector outlines to pixels in different ways depending on the device. The document provides examples of how LCD and e-ink screens display pixels. It recommends choosing fonts designed for screens that have vertical proportions, shapes, spacing, and weights suitable for small sizes. Adjusting line height and size can improve readability when combining fonts. Font designers are working to optimize existing fonts and design new fonts specifically for legibility on screens.
The document summarizes a presentation on the history and evolution of risk-based corrective action (RBCA) for environmental remediation. It discusses how RBCA developed from early cleanup standards using total petroleum hydrocarbons to more sophisticated site-specific risk assessment approaches. It also overviewed the global environmental remediation market, noting the US and Europe as leaders and emerging opportunities in Asia and developing countries.
The document provides guidance on preparing for and participating in job interviews, including researching the employer and position, practicing common interview questions, using examples from your experience, and reviewing your performance after the interview. It also describes different types of interviews like competency-based, group, panel, and assessment centers that may involve exercises, presentations, or psychometric tests. Resources for practicing interviews are recommended, as preparation, research, and demonstrating relevant skills and qualifications are emphasized as important for interview success.

The document discusses the benefits and risks of medical radiation exposure in children. It finds that chest X-rays were the most common radiological exam performed on children in hospitals, even when over 50% provided no diagnostic benefit. The absorbed radiation doses for children were three to four times higher than reference values. Improving hospital protocols could help optimize exams and lower unnecessary radiation exposure for patients.

The document provides guidance on designing effective PowerPoint presentations. It discusses choosing templates and slide designs, using images and visuals purposefully, making text and numbers easy to read, using animation sparingly, and structuring the presentation with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion to support the overarching message. Effective presentations enhance the speaker and support the audience's understanding rather than replacing the speaker or dominating the presentation.
The document provides tips for creating effective PowerPoint presentations. It recommends using high quality pictures that tell a story without pixellation or distortion. Font choices should create contrast between headings and body text. ºÝºÝߣs should have boundaries, breathing room, repetition of elements, and alignment of lined-up items. Presentations should be unexpected and improve over iterations by applying the recommended tips.

Typographic Design: Form & Communication is the definitive reference for graphic designers, providing a comprehensive introduction to the visual word. Done well, typopgraphy can communicate so much more than the words themselves. Typographic design determines how you feel about a message, the associations you make, and ultimately, the overall success of the communication. Typographic design extends from the page to the screen, and is a critical element of almost any graphic design project. This book provides essential guidance on everything related to type: from letterforms and negative space, to messaging, processes, and history, aspiring designers will find great utility in mastering these critical concepts.
Creating mobile content presents some interesting challenges for the designer and developer alike. From screen size, button size, typeface, and layout decisions to using unique mobile capabilities such as the accelerometer, gestures and geolocation. Casa Netural residency in Gorizia offered Diego an opportunity to test the ideas that he has been developing over the past years and to enrich them by looking at them from a different and complementary perspective. In other words to put theory into practice.
Along the 4 weeks that he lived in Gorizia he realized how mature and innovative his own understanding of the ludic phenomenon, as most people he connected with, found the value of his research, but what was amazing for him is how much his project was fed back from completely different and complementary perspectives.
Along these days he crafter four game ideas, with different levels of complexity and currently in different stages of development. These are described in the final report.
