There are different types of hepatic (liver) resection based on anatomical location. A wedge resection removes a non-anatomical portion of the liver, while a sectorectomy refers to the removal of one of four specific anatomical sections: right anterior, right posterior, left medial, or left lateral.

Types of hepatic resection
2. The types of hepatic resection are based on the anatomic nomenclature. "Wedge
resection" refers to any nonanatomic liver resection exclusive of biopsy.
"Sectorectomy" refers to any one of the following: right anterior sectorectomy,
right posterior sectorectomy, left medial sectorectomy, and left lateral
sectorectomy.
