Compression forces cause convergent boundaries where plates push together, like at subduction zones where one plate slides under another into the mantle or at collision zones where plates smash together to form mountains. Tension forces cause divergent boundaries where plates pull apart, like at mid-ocean ridges where new crust is formed as the plates move away from each other. Shear forces cause transform boundaries where plates slide horizontally past each other.
