It notes that governments are mandated to meet international accessibility standards to provide equal access to online information and services. Meeting these standards can help businesses secure more work with government, diversify services, reduce litigation risk, and be seen as thought leaders. The document provides an overview of how to implement accessibility in practice, including understanding client needs, staff training, and integrating it into the project lifecycle.

Web accessibility know how
Editor's Notes
#6: All government digital projects will include the requirement that their websites must comply with WCAG 2.0 AA.WCAG 2.0 is the international standard for web accessibility. 3 levels of compliance.Digital agencies who have the capability of delivering accessible web projects is quite small, yet if you want to trade with government you must be able to provide these services.Government is having to look outside of the approve vendor list for these skills
#7: It is not just government that is including accessibility as a requirement, it is also corporates.Under the Disability Discrimination ActDigital agencies who are capable of delivering accessible digital projects will increase market share.Word of mouth
#8: Charge for captioningAdditional user experience and usability testingAccessible content creation
#9: Government departments vary in their understanding of accessibility requirements, and they will be placing responsibility for the delivery of accessibility requirements on you. This is not the time to do a half-arsed job on accessibility, avoid litiation. The NTS has increased the expectations of consumers with disabilitiesWe know that the once the deadline hits at the end of the year, consumer groups will be mobilised and will be contacting organisations about inaccessible websites and filing complaints to the AHRC
#10: Because the number of digital agencies who can meet the accessibility requirements remains small, word of mouth has a huge impact in this space.Hero websites will be widely publicised and applauded. Our own Human Rights Commission Graeme Innes who is legally blind is not shy about praising and criticising in public.
#13: Understand the scope and complexity that comes with accessibilityDont be tempted to undercut or underprice, but also dont be tempted to overprice.
#14: Invest time and money in staff trainingAccessibility is no different to your staff learning a new technology or going to a project management training course. There will be a learning curve. Id recommend absorbing the added time necessary
#15: Accessibility in practice is not going to work if the responsibility for creating an accessible website rests solely with on person.Embedding accessibility into your project lifecycle and assigning responsibilities appropriately will reduce the time and cost associated with accessibility.Accessibility should not be an afterthought, there are new rules for how to create things.
