UniStartups is a social news site and directory for UK-based student startups that was created in 24 hours. The site provides an online community for students at Warwick University to share information about their startup projects and ideas. After launching and promoting the site through blogs and forums, it was featured on TechCrunch Europe and began receiving 300 unique visitors per day. The creator aims to expand the community to over 1,000 daily users and may explore monetization options like ads in the future.
2. About me I'm a second year Computer Science student at Warwick Along with Oo, I run Warwick Internet Entrepreneurs Started learning web development this year. Most succesful project: multiplayer browser game
3. UniStartups A social news site and directory for UK-based students building startups I came up with the idea on Monday, set it up that evening On Tuesday it was featured on TechCrunch Europe
4. Idea Need for an online gathering point for the Warwick startup community Static website, Facebook group, blog, forum all less than ideal Hacker News: one of the best resources for startup founders. Why? The community
5. Development Could have built it myself, but used Slinkset platform for convenience Chicken/egg problem of getting users: posted on blogs, forums, Facebook Why would people contribute content? One possibility: promoting something (their blog, startup, event...) Why
6. Post-TechCrunch Now up to ~300 uniques a day, but people need a reason to keep coming back @anddy: "awesome idea if it grows beyond 1 guy's bookmarks!" Asking people to recommend blogs (for content) and friends (for users) Why
7. The Future Moved site to www.unistartups.com, makes it possible to move off Slinkset if needed Milestone: 1000 unique visitors a day Will it make money? Possibly (ads?), but I think it will be more succesful as a community then as a business Why
