A Knoevenagel condensation is a nucleophilic addition of an active hydrogen compound to a carbonyl group followed by a dehydration reaction in which a molecule of water is eliminated (hence condensation). The product is often an 留,硫-unsaturated ketone (a conjugated enone).
The Reformatsky reaction is an organic reaction used to convert an 留-haloester and an aldehyde or ketone to a 硫-hydroxyester using zinc metal followed by an acid work-up. ... An acid work-up then cleaves the zinc-oxygen bond to give the final 硫-hydroxyester product and a zinc(II) salt.
