The United Arab Emirates is a country located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. It has a population of over 9 million people, with Emirati citizens making up only 1.4 million of that total. The UAE is a federation of seven emirates (equivalent to principalities) governed by hereditary rulers. Abu Dhabi serves as the capital and Dubai has emerged as an important global business hub. Islam is the official religion and Arabic the official language.

In 2013, the UAE's total population was 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million are Emirati citizens and 7.8 million are expatriates from around the world.

One of the rulers is selected as the President of the United Arab Emirates. The constituent emirates are Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Islam is the official religion of the UAE, and Arabic is the official language. Its most populous city, Dubai, has emerged as a business hub and a global city.
