Heroin use in Naperville, Illinois has become a serious problem, leading to several deaths of people ages 17-30 recently. The author proposes several solutions:
1) Offering free drug education and counseling classes through the non-profit organization Naperville Cares to help address the underlying causes of addiction.
2) Distributing the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone more widely in the community through initiatives like the DuPage Program sponsored by the local health department.
3) Increasing awareness of the issue and available resources by providing education to students and parents in local high schools on the signs of addiction and how to get help.
2. Problem
Some say that the use of heroin in Chicago (Naperville) is worse than any other place
in the country. Physicians who treat people with heroin addictions say the drug is
highly addictive. Naperville detectives have been focusing their work on trying to stop
the use of heroin, and has caused several deaths recently, ages ranging from 17-30.
3. Free drug education & counseling
Heroin is something that no one wanted to talk about in this community until recently when people realized
that dying from the drug has become a reality.
Heroin is a drug that most commonly leads to a drug overdose, since users have to consume more of it to get
the same high.
As with any drug, the exact time of recovery from heroin overdose or addiction will vary between people. Just
detoxing from the substance will not be enough: the person will need to undergo counseling which can last
months.
This can get expensive sometimes costing thousands per month. Many health insurance providers will not
cover the full cost of treatment, instead only covering the initial detox period. You’ll likely need to look into
payment plans and finances.
5. Naperville Cares
This is a non profit organization that caters to the needs of people within our
community. My close friend Palma Aikins and works for Cares. Together we would try
to organizes free classes for people
assistance.
6. This drug is claiming the lives of children

8. The DuPage Programis sponsored by the Health Department, put up the initial $40,000 to get the program
started annd supplied with Narcan the trade name fro the drug Naloxone.
Alternative Drugs & Reasearch
9. Going into the High Schools within the community, and giving students tools and
resources that they can utilize or give to someone they know.
Reaching out to parents to get involved. Take time to notice signs and get help. Early
intervention is key to success.
