Most major US cities are located in the eastern half of the country. The top five most populous cities are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. New York City is located on islands at the mouth of the Hudson River in the northeast and has a very high population density due to its limited land area from being on islands. Its port has made it a key center for trade and immigration, contributing to its large population.
