Using technology to address new trends in Construction Management
I go to where the puck is going, not where its been -Wayne Gretzky
Construction trends LEED 3D Modeling -> 4D ->5D Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) Lean Construction Less work, lower margins Higher expectations Failure not an option
Any others? Design shifting to subs? More planning Better quality logistics plans More sophisticated marketing presentations More educated and talented workforce
Focus points Collaborate Reduce waste Educate Quality presentation Mobilize Eliminate paper
LEED Needs to be tracked and monitored All products need to be checked Go paperless or paper - less
BIM Architecture, engineering and construction journal AECbytes cites BIM's potential as a "disruptive technology" that could drastically change how the build industry operates.
"As recognition of the benefits of BIM grows, the ability of design professionals, contractors, fabricators and suppliers to work effectively in this new environment will increasingly become a competitive differentiator in winning work," McGraw-Hill Construction says.
IPD IPD is a project deliver approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harness the talents and insights of all participants to reduce waste and optimize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication, and construction. -AIA

More technology Project Management Web sites Wikis, microsites, team sites Task based programs
And now lets apply the technology trends to the construction trends
Trend: LEED (Sustainable, energy, paper) Applications: Education, webinars, etc. PDF markup tools Cloud computing Web conferencing
Trend: BIM (Build it on a computer first) Applications: Training, reading, webinars Navisworks Google Sketchup & Google Earth Vico as a service and education Autodesk website
Trend: IPD (collaborate, optimize talent and efficiency) Applications: Collaboration/Team web sites/Wikis Web conferencing Empower talent Share knowledge Use social media (Linked In, Blogs)
Trend: Lean (reduce waste, rework, travel time) Web meetings More efficient work practices Better software Team web sites (Teambox, et al) Larger & multi screens Empower field force with CDs on jobsite Tablets, iPads, wifi in field
Trend: Planning (More well thought out, better quality plans) Applications: PDF Markup tools BIM license and modeler available on every major job Google Earth and Sketchup
A word about tools, trampolines, and riding a bike
