Vampires became famous after Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula brought the mythological creature into popular culture. Traditionally seen as foul-smelling monsters that could only come out at night and were killed by sunlight, vampires are now often depicted as sexually attractive and charismatic beings with superhuman intelligence and powers. Modern portrayals in movies and TV shows emphasize vampires' pale skin and canine teeth while downplaying their earlier monstrous characteristics.
