MS-DOS was an early operating system owned by Microsoft that was based on 86-DOS, which was owned by Seattle Computer Products. Microsoft needed an operating system for Intel's 8086 processor and licensed 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products. MS-DOS 1.0 was then released with the IBM PC in 1982. There were internal commands that were loaded with the operating system and external commands that had to be loaded from disk before use.
