Smith System Consulting is considering alternative ways to communicate with clients beyond newsletters. They are exploring using wikis, podcasts, or blogs. Each modality should be evaluated on how effectively information can be conveyed, startup and maintenance costs, the client experience, and how it affects search engine optimization. Wikis could allow client interaction and sharing while blogs provide a forum for comments. Podcasts offer content in episodic formats on various platforms. Overall, podcasts seem to be the most cost-effective, user-friendly option that can increase awareness through different devices.

A wiki is a database of pages that users can edit live and use as a discussion medium, a mail system, or a tool for collaboration .
Blogs are inexpensive to start up, but there are some disadvantages that can be costly. Disadvantages of blogs are that they are time-consuming and time is money. As a result, many blogs are not updated, thus damaging rather than enhancing the reputation of the organization (McGovern,2004)
A disadvantage of podcasting for Smith System Consulting is that it is a video. The company would have to organize a production reach their clients. Podcasting would not allow the companys client to give immediate feedback.
The information that should be conveyed through either Wiki, blogs or podcasts should be specific, easy for the customer to understand and up to date. Providing feedback, corporate data, information regarding new and existing products and service, and increasing business and brand awareness are key to items to ensuring a more successful company. Using internet tools like Wiki, blogs or podcasts are great ways to convey the information the company wants to tell their customers.
The podcast is the blog of the audio world. Smith System consulting can reach its clients via podcast through a variety of free companies that cast podcasts; Apple iTunes and Stitcher. Another added benefit is that the Podcast can be linked through the Smith Consulting site and just about anywhere on the web via RSS. Setting up podcasts are free. The podcasts can be put onto iTunes and Stitcher for people to download as well as being linked via RSS. The only potential cost would be if Smith consulting decides to go the route of doing a professional podcast and hiring a crew to manage the podcast. Blogging is also free and can be done through a variety of online companies such as blogger or even wordpress. The best part is that this can be done on the Smith consulting site, and if done in house, is 100% completely free. It can then be linked elsewhere via RSS A wikipedia page will be the information modality. When saying this think of encyclopedia. While the other modalities relay information, a wikipedia is most like a fact site in a sense.
These days every Internet user today knows a search engine can be a great tool for finding the various things a person is looking for, whether it is a recipe, maps or directions and how tos regarding just about anything. Some search engines are better than others and are more popular than others. Google and Bing are the most popular search engines used today. Search engines are the first things people will go to when searching anything these days. Like the Internet, there are endless pages of different things on the Internet, and thousands of searches done every day through various search engines. People who go to a search engine to look for something are ready to buy what ever it is that they are looking for. For a company like Smith Systems Consulting search engines like Google and Bing will be beneficial to them because it will help their customers find their blog, podcast, or Wikipedia.
Looking at the future of technology and the internet, Smith Systems consulting would benefit greatly from developing and using podcasts to give their current and future customers an insight into what products and services area available and what is new with the company. Podcasts whether audio or video can be used for more in-depth explanations of various things going on with the company and their development. Podcasts may be even more beneficial due to a users ability to listen to the podcast pretty much anywhere they go. While podcasts would be the best options for Smith Systems Consulting, the company should create a Wikipedia page and used it to provide basic company information, but they must keep in mind that others could alter the information, which could mislead customers.
