VELT Module 1 Day 1 Created: 7/10/13 Page: 1 General Cleaning Vocational English Language Training Module 4 Module Duration: 2 hours (4:00-6:00, Thursday) Module Description: Teach 11 vocabulary words with accompanying activities. Module Goals: Have students successfully sign in on their replica timecard. Teach the following words: o Bathroom o Stairs o Elevator o Bathroom o Laundry o Window o Table o Chair o Bed o Couch/Sofa o Door Review the words through classroom activities Send students home with vocabulary list and activity handouts to study Module Materials: Sign-in sheet Module 4 PowerPoint o Vocabulary slides o Things to Clean Matching Game o Doors v. Windows Activity o Bedroom v. Bathroom Activity o Final Vocabulary Matching Game Flashcards (classroom set) Props for hands-on activities/demonstrations Hand out for both Matching Games Take-home vocabulary sheet 3 cleaning videos (linked to PPT)
VELT Module 1 Day 1 Created: 7/10/13 Page: 2 Topic Content Media/Materials/Notes Fill out timesheet (10 Min.) Have students fill out their sign-in/time sheet when they first arrive in class. Tell them that it is like a timesheet that they will be required to fill out for their employer. Make sure each student has done the first week correctly. Show them where in the classroom they can find the time and date (you can write it for them on the board) ACTIVITY: Timesheet Introductions (10 Min) Introduce yourself Ask for student introductions o Ask them to say their name, where theyre from, and to remember one word they learning in the past 3 days. ACTIVITY: Have students come to the front of the class and introduce themselves. Go over items to clean vocabulary (15 Min) Bed, window, door, table, chair, couch/sofa Show the video for making the bed, cleaning the window, and opening the door linked on PPT. MATERIALS: PowerPoint Module 4, with VIDEOS DEMONSTATIONS: When teaching each word point to it if the item is present in the classroom (window, door, table, chair). In class matching game (10 min) Create flashcards before coming that say window, table, chair and door. Give each student a set with tape on the back and see if they can place the word on the object in the classroom. ACTIVITY: live matching game Review Game (10 Min) Do the PowerPoint activity titled Review Game MATERIALS: PowerPoint Module 4 HANDOUT: Review Game handout ACTIVITY: Review with the class the answers and make sure they get the right answers on their handout. Doors and Windows activity Go through the doors and windows activity having students raise their hand and say the right word, or to come point to the door or window, MATERIALS: PPT Module 4
VELT Module 1 Day 1 Created: 7/10/13 Page: 3 (8 minutes) etc. Final Vocab PowerPoint presentation (10 Min) Begin vocabulary review on the PowerPoint o Bedroom o Bathroom o Stairs o Elevator o Laundry MATERIALS: PowerPoint Module 4 BREAK (10 Min) Give the class a 10 minute break Make sure that they sign out on their timesheet Make sure that they also sign back in. ACTIVITY: Replica Timesheet Flashcard Practice (10 Min) Quickly review words discussed before the break on the PPT Hand out flashcards for students to review with. Have the students work in groups to test each other. DEMONSTRATION - Show them how to lay all of the cards down with picture up and to turn it over and read and say aloud the word. Bedroom v. Bathroom activity (10 Min) Go through the activity having students raise their hand and say the right word. As you go through, test student by pointing to different items in the rooms for them to name such as sink or bed or bathtub. MATERIALS: Module 4 PPT Review Game Activity 2 (5 Min) Do the PowerPoint activity titled Review Game. Give the students time to match on their handout, then test their answers. MATERIALS: PowerPoint Module 4 HANDOUT: Review Game handout ACTIVITY: Review with the class the answers and make sure they get the right answers on their handout.
VELT Module 1 Day 1 Created: 7/10/13 Page: 4 Follow up: Report the following to Stephen or Waleed o Any students that really struggle to understand concepts or are very slow learners. o Anyone that detracts from the class or has a bad attitude. o Anyone that struggles with personal hygiene. Log your progress and notes from the day on the GoogleDoc for the person teaching the next module. Extra activities (N/A) IF THERES EXTRA TIME Be creative bring in your own wrap-up activity. Have students act out how to use different props from the lesson. o Example: Tell a student to imitate washing the floor with the mop or sweeping with the broom. You may decide to use flashcards at this point if they were skipped earlier. Finalize timesheets (10 Min) Have students finalize their sign-in card and collect them. They are not to go home. ACTIVITY Timesheet card Next Module Info (2 Min) Tell them when their next lesson is and ask them to study their vocabulary/note sheet and handouts each day.
