2/10/80 was considered the founding date of PT political party as it was the date when their manifesto was signed by over 101 people, fulfilling the requirements under Brazilian law. In 1984, there was a large pro-democracy movement called "Direct Elections Now" that supported amending the constitution to allow for direct presidential elections. In 1985, Tancredo Neves was elected president via an indirect election but passed away before taking office. The 1988 Brazilian constitution established new citizen rights and protections. Several new states were created in 1988 as well. The first visit from Pope John Paul II in 1980 was a massive popular event across Brazil.
