What is Violence? Violence against women is any assault on a woman's body, physical integrity, or freedom of movement through individual acts and social oppression. Violence against women is about power and control. It is rooted in the power imbalances that exist between men and women .
Forms of Abuse Battering Rape Sexual and physical abuse Verbal and emotional abuse Murder by partner Forced sterilization Female genital cutting Stalking Trafficking of women and girls Pornography that sexualizes violence and promotes violent sex Psychological manipulation Sexual coercion in the workplace
Two thirds of women who are raped are raped by an intimate or an acquaintance? Almost one in every four women in the United States has been raped and/or physically assaulted?
Violence and Racism Violence against women and racism are profoundly connected. Factors includes: -Race -Class -Sexual Orientation -Age
Who is at higher risk? Women of color Older women Young women Immigrant women Refugees Lesbians Poor women Women with disability
Not enough Resources - Organizations that aim to serve victims of violence are not aware of or do not have sufficient resources to serve the widest range of women Ex- Hotlines in the United States may be available only in English, and courts may be inaccessible to women who have no telephone, transportation or child care
Common Reactions to Trauma Self blame Fear, Terror and feeling unsafe Anger and rage Substance abuse Eating disorder Physical symptoms Self harm Grief and loss Isolation Flashbacks and nightmares Dissociation Changes in sexuality and intimacy Spiritual crisis
Warning Signs Making angry gestures Destroying objects  Threatening to hurt you or others Sexual violence Physical violence Use of weapons
Rape -Also called sexual assault, is any kind of sexual  activity committed against someone’s will.
Statistics 18 percent of women said they have been the victim of a completed or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime. Survey interviewed only women over eighteen, almost 22 percent reported that they were younger than age twelve when they were raped and half were under age eighteen.
Why do women stay? Sometimes we may feel trapped and unable to leave We may still love our partner and hope the battering will end If we have children, we may think that we will not be able to support them and ourselves if we leave People whom we trust to support us may not know how to intervene or provide help
Things to do when during an attack Stay calm Try to shield yourself, especially your head and stomach Call 911 if you are able to Do the best you can to end the attach with less injuries
Safety Planning Carry important phone numbers with you Find someone to tell about the abuse and develop a signal for distress Think of some few places where you can go and not  be tracked down by your abuser if you leave in a hurry Get specific items ready to take if you leave Keep change for phone calls Rehearse an escape route
What to do if you have been raped Go to the nearest hospital Get treatment for prevention of pregnancy Get educated about AIDS/HIV Get treatments for prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) Examination and treatment of any external injuries Get a pelvic exam.
Regaining Our lives It is never your fault, do not blame yourself. The best choices were made before, during or after There is no right or wrong way to heal A support system is needed We need to give ourselves time to heal
How to protect yourself Safety in social situations Safety in intimate relationships Safety at home Safety in neighborhood Safety on street Calling for help on the highway Take a self-defense class
