Open data in Russia has grown since 2009 but still has opportunities for improvement. As of 2012, key facts about open data in Russia included over 1 million government data sets published, hundreds of citizen and mobile apps created using open data, and several regulations and portals established to encourage open data use. However, an estimated 180 billion rubles were still inefficiently used by local governments each year. Events like an open data hackathon aim to spur more innovative uses of open data to address such issues.
