Strategic Discussion: Could
We Have a Voice? Neutrality &
           Opinion

                    - July 1, 2012
Who Are We?

Global Voices is an International Community of bloggers and
translators who report on citizen media stories from around the
world, with emphasis on voices that are not ordinarily heard in
International mainstream media.

   Bridge bloggers
Aggregators & Curators of social media content
   Amplifiers of citizen media stories
Facilitators for emergence of new voices
Advocates for the rights of citizen journalists/ bloggers to
express themselves freely and without persecution
Excuse
me, but could
 We have a
   Voice?
TO VOICE OR NOT TO VOICE?

Q1: I feel that authors and translators in GV ought to have a voice rather than merely
    curating voices of netizens

WHY SHOULD WE HAVE A VOICE?
Not getting deep impressions of other cultures/regions
 Too many links = NOISE!
Not being able to share our own experiences
Adding context to posts by authors/translators
 Adding colour/feel to our stories
Some important stories lack social media buzz and therefore
  out of our scope
Sometimes we are unable to take advantage of our lead in
breaking stories because netizens could be slow to react.
OUR CONCERNS AROUND VOICE
 NEUTRALITY /BALANCE
Neutrality and/or balanced reporting means presenting
different sides of an argument irrespective of our own
point of view. That is what I want on GV.
Our selection of blogs/social media content for our GV
posts is often an indicator of our sympathies and cannot be
     called neutral.
Our current method of selecting blogs to link is subjective.
A proper guideline being developed for authors on how to
be neutral/ balanced when selecting sources and links.
 INTRA-COMMUNITY HARMONY
The extent to which having our voice on GV is likely to negatively
affect our tone and positioning of neutrality and/or balanced
  reporting

WHAT VOICE COULD BE
 Analysis/depth
 Adding context to stories
 Different perspectives by different authors
Factual information to cut through opinion
  overload
Using our voices to amplify offline marginal
  voices
My GV: A feature section sub-category on the GV
  site
WHAT VOICE MAY OR MAY NOT BE
Our GV posts we should have more debates and discussions
about issues rather than focus on a collation of netizens speak
Translating a small quote is not enough to amplify voices. GV
should have a space to for us to translate complete posts, videos
etc., from among those we link to - for the global audience.
GV contributors to have a more detailed and expressive profiles
  section on GV
To have a short 2-3line CV of authors/translators below each GV
  post
Adding context to our GV posts via our personal understanding
of the topic and not merely by linking to other sources of
  reference
Breaking news through our own voice?
WHAT VOICES MAY/MAY NOT BE
                 (LINGUA)
Lingua offers greater scope for authors to have their own voice, to better
connect with readers from their region/ community.
Lingua readers sometimes see too many links as noise. Instead, an
explanation in the authors own voice would be more interesting.
