Dear colleagues,
It is my pleasure to provide my strongest recommendation for Wah Lap Cheung.
I supervised Wah Lap in 2010 in a directed research project, for which he received the
highest possible grade of A+. In my opinion he is very intelligent, hard working,
responsible and personable young man.
Wah Lap took the lead role in developing this research project, carrying it out,
and writing it up. This was very challenging work that required him to learn new skills
and research approaches in a relatively short period of time. The research required
him to work with a large provincial survey database, and he learned how to manage
this database very quickly.
The project involved examining whether or not the sociodemographic predictors
of Anxiety and Mood Disorder (AMD) in the adult population changed with age. In
order to carry out this work, he had to learn principles of epidemiology and how to
analyse large datasets. The work was also conceptually challenging, since it required
him to understand the research literature on AMD and aging in order to formulate the
research and analysis plans. I was extremely impressed with his conceptual abilities.
The work was completed successfully thanks to his commitment to the project.
The results provide very important and original new information on changes to the
determinants of AMD with age. We have presented the results of this work at a major
international research conference, and are preparing to publish a report of these
findings in a refereed journal. Wah Lap will be first author on this report.
On a personal level, Wah Lap is a delightful person who was very highly
regarded by everyone here. He works very well independently, and also works well in
collaborative situations. His calm, reasoned and cheerful approach to things predicts
success in any activity he may choose to undertake.
In summary, in my opinion Wah Lap is a very intelligent, hardworking person
who would be a great asset to any organization, and I therefore have no hesitation in
giving him my highest recommendation. Please feel free to contact me if I can provide
