Social research is an exciting, active endeavour. For me, the thrill of seeing a set of my data
for the fi rst time is right up there on the list of lifes good moments. For most new social
researchers, and a good many old ones, our enthusiasm at the start of a new research
project can be almost overwhelming. Th e impetus to get out there and start the real
research, that is, collecting and analysing our data, is very strong.
But social science research is a process and a practice that involves much more than
data collection and analysis. To achieve the results we want and to ensure that our fi rst
forays into our data are thrilling, not devastating, all elements of that process and practice
need to be fully understood and embedded into the research project in a coherent and
structured way. As is made clear in Chapters 2 and 3, in most projects, data collection and
analysis will come towards the end of the research project, not at the start. Good quality
data, of whatever type, can only be collected from a strong foundation. Th is is where most
of the real research work of any project is actually done.
Th is foundation includes a solid theoretical and personal understanding of social
science research process, a dedication to thorough preparation and planning within that
process, an awareness and a commitment to addressing the moral and ethical dimensions
of our research, an extensive and critical review of the empirical and theoretical literature
around our topic, and ensuring that we have the technical and theoretical expertise油 to
undertake all aspects of the research process in a competent and rigorous way. While
fi gurative outlines of this process tend to be linked linear boxes, I prefer a more
metaphorical油vision of these aspects as a nest, supporting, enveloping and nurturing the
data and their analyses and interpretations. It is these foundational elements of social
science research that are covered in this fi rst section.
Th e opening fi ve chapters set the context for the next eleven. Each details a diff erent
core element of good social science research. Chapters 1 to 4, on the nature, design, and
process of social science research are individually focused, but work together to set out,
in practical terms, the whats, whys, and hows of developing a quality social science
research project, one that is methodologically clear, theoretically informed and empirically
and conceptually rigorous. It is at this developmental stage that the ethical and moral
dimensions of the research must be addressed. Th e foregrounding of what makes research
practice ethical in this fi rst section is purposeful. Because most of our research concerns
people, ethics sits at the core of social science research. Ethical research goes further
than ensuring that we do not expose our respondents, wittingly or unwittingly, to harm.

Abstract
This study addresses the question of what factors determine acceptance and adoption of
processes in the context of Information Technology (IT) software development projects.
This specific context was selected because processes required for managing software
development projects are less prescriptive than in other, more straightforward, IT
contexts. Adopting a process that affects how well custom software is developed and
implemented may be different from would be required in the IT Infrastructure field.
Levels of acceptance and adoption are ascertained using the Unified Theory of the Use
and Acceptance of Technology (UTAUT) model first proposed by Venkataesh, Morris,
Davis & Davis (2003), combining several technology acceptance models into one that
demonstrated the best fit for studying acceptance of technology. As suggested by
Venkatesh (Venkatesh, 2006) in a later study, the model was applied to the study of
process acceptance. Like the original study, this was based on a survey sent to IT
software development project practitioners who had actually worked on projects within
two months of conducting the study. Results show that effort expectancy, attitude, social
influence, facilitating conditions, and self-efficacy are significant determinants for
accepting process; and that attitude in particular is a determinant of process adoption. The
original study on technology acceptance found that performance expectancy, effort
expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions were significant. While the
studies agree on significance of effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating
conditions, this study found that self-efficacy and attitude are also significant, and that
performance expectancy is not. Attitude, in particular, demonstrated that the respondents

This dissertation examines the effects of the activities of the South African ManKind Project (MKP-SA), a mythopoetic men's group, on promoting gender equality from 2004-2005. Through participant observation, interviews, and surveys of MKP-SA members, the study analyzes how the group's activities impacted members' personal relationships and willingness to engage in pro-feminist work. While some activities seemed to support dominant forms of masculinity, others promoted emotional openness and responsibility in relationships, challenging aspects of patriarchy. Abstract
This study addresses the question of what factors determine acceptance and adoption of
processes in the context of Information Technology (IT) software development projects.
This specific context was selected because processes required for managing software
development projects are less prescriptive than in other, more straightforward, IT
contexts. Adopting a process that affects how well custom software is developed and
implemented may be different from would be required in the IT Infrastructure field.
Levels of acceptance and adoption are ascertained using the Unified Theory of the Use
and Acceptance of Technology (UTAUT) model first proposed by Venkataesh, Morris,
Davis & Davis (2003), combining several technology acceptance models into one that
demonstrated the best fit for studying acceptance of technology. As suggested by
Venkatesh (Venkatesh, 2006) in a later study, the model was applied to the study of
process acceptance. Like the original study, this was based on a survey sent to IT
software development project practitioners who had actually worked on projects within
two months of conducting the study. Results show that effort expectancy, attitude, social
influence, facilitating conditions, and self-efficacy are significant determinants for
accepting process; and that attitude in particular is a determinant of process adoption. The
original study on technology acceptance found that performance expectancy, effort
expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions were significant. While the
studies agree on significance of effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating
conditions, this study found that self-efficacy and attitude are also significant, and that

I supervised Wah Lap in 2010 in a directed research project, for which he received the highest possible grade of A+. In my opinion he is very intelligent, hard working, responsible and personable young man. Wah Lap took the lead role in developing this research project, carrying it out, and writing it up. This was very challenging work that required him to learn new skills and research approaches in a relatively short period of time. The research required him to work with a large provincial survey database, and he learned how to manage this database very quickly. The project involved examining whether or not the sociodemographic predictors of Anxiety and Mood Disorder (AMD) in the adult population changed with age. In order to carry out this work, he had to learn principles of epidemiology and how to analyse large datasets. The work was also conceptually challenging, since it required him to understand the research literature on AMD and aging in order to formulate the research and analysis plans. I was extremely impressed with his conceptual abilities. The work was completed successfully thanks to his commitment to the project. The results provide very important and original new information on changes to the determinants of AMD with age. We have presented the results of this work at a major international research conference, and are preparing to publish a report of these findings in a refereed journal. Wah Lap will be first author on this report. On a personal level, Wah Lap is a delightful person who was very highly regarded by everyone here. He works very well independently, and also works well in collaborative situations. His calm, reasoned and cheerful approach to things predicts success in any activity he may choose to undertake. In summary, in my opinion Wah Lap is a very intelligent, hardworking person who would be a great asset to any organization, and I therefore have no hesitation in giving him my highest recommendation.
