Samantha and her class took a trip to Aratoi art gallery and museum in Masterton, New Zealand. There, they learned about the history of Lake Wairarapa from a guide named Miss Whaiti, including facts about the long fin and short fin eels that live in the lake. Samantha discovered that New Zealand eels breed only once near Tonga or Samoa and then die, and both main eel species are found in Lake Wairarapa and surrounding areas. She also learned that Wairarapa Moana is the Māori name for Lake Wairarapa and it was gifted by the local iwi in 1896 rather than sold.

Eely Facts • The long fin eels is only found in New Zealand, While the short fin eel can be found in south east Australia and around the Pacific. • New Zealand eels breed only once, possibly near Homemade fishing hooks Tonga(long fin) and Samoa (short fin) and then die. • Both main species of eel are found in Wairarapa Moana, Lake Onoke and surrounding areas. •
- 4. Wairarapa Moana... • Wairarapa Moana is the maori name for Lake Wairarapa. • The signing of the gifting of the lake was at Papawai on the 13th January 1896. • The lake was not sold it was simply given as a gift.
- 5. Interesting... • While the mountains on both sides of Wairarapa Moana are rising, the lake bed is too, but more slowly. Looking south from Western Lake road, the far skyline near Lake Ferry is warped into a broad, open ‘U’ • Possums were released around Featherston in 1872 to become an environmental pest and threat the local economy.
