- 3. Facts Uber was once known as UberCab. It started in the streets of San Francisco. Uber launched in New York City in May 2011. Uber expanded internationally to Paris, France in December 2011.
- 4. What industry/market did Ubers service impact? Ubers rise has led to massive demonstrations by taxi drivers. Courts have banned or restricted Ubers services for participating in unfair competition with regular taxis.

While other ridesharing online platforms such as Lyft and Sidecar use similar business models, Uber is the center of the debate due to its size and rapid growth worldwide. In December, Uber was valued at $68 billion, having taken just 6 years to surpass the valuation of 100-year-old companies like General Motors and Ford, as well as traditional transportation companies like Hertz and Avis.
