The document discusses municipal solid waste management and waste-to-energy concepts. It covers topics like size reduction, separation, and density separation. Prof. M.R. Ezhilkumar teaches a course on solid and hazardous waste management that includes concepts of material handling and the unit operations used in a mechanized waste separation system.

Material Handling
 Segregation and separation of reusable/recyclable components of solid wastes is
best carried out at the source of its generation.
 However, special equipment may be installed and facilities created at suitable
locations e.g. near transfer stations.
 Such facilities are commonly developed in many countries.
 Material separation can also be carried out at the site of wastes processing units to
separate out commingled MSW into usable components.

Question
Sketch a sequence of unit operations for a mechanized waste
separation system. The input waste includes paper products,
food waste, glass, plastic (PETE, HDPE, and others), metals
(ferrous and nonferrous), and hazardous wastes. List all the
equipment that would be required for adequate separation.
Include at least one shredder.
