It has been a gray and overcast few years for fans of Knicks
basketball. Just when it looked like the sun was finally coming
out, franchise player Kristaps Porzingis went down from an ACL
injury. It would take more than a year at the least to get the
Latvian star completely rehabbed.

Many NBA experts blame the Knicks sorry state on bad decision-
making. For years the team couldnt shake off its contract with
Carmelo Anthony, and his spat with then-president Phil Jackson
didnt help. Jackson was keen on maintaining his triangle offense
as well, in a league that now champions tons of brisk play,
passing, and torrid outside shooting. The Knicks also managed to
tie itself to huge salaries for so-so players like Tim Hardaway Jr.
The one bright spot is Frank Ntilikina, who could develop into a
legitimate star in a few years.
But theres great news. The hiring of former Memphis coach David
Fizdale should help immensely in bringing method in the New
York basketball madness. The team was likewise able to acquire
two solid big rookies in the draft, Kevin Knox and Mitchell
Robinson. While the Knicks wait for Porzingis to recover, Fizdale
can begin inculcating his respected basketball philosophy on the
young players.

In any case, if the Knicks were to reach the playoffs next year,
theyve to model their game after Bostons. The rebuilding is still
incomplete, and the absence of Porzingis will be felt greatly. But
the team should now have more offensive options. Fizdale should
likewise be able to foster better team cohesion and commitment
to defense. If the team manages to stay competitive late in the
regular season, Porzingis can carry them at least into the second
round of the playoffs.
