5. Willoughby Engineering is breaking old paradigms in building systems engineering and
high-performance design services.
The firms progressive approach utilizes an integrated design process, including MEP/FP, sustainability, building
physics, and masterplan engineering, informing architectural visions through an ethos of high-performance.
This is what makes WE different!!
Real interest in informing architectural design from a performance perspective.
We are often called on to participate in design efforts when the architectural design is still just an
idea.
We define High Performance and Sustainable design as its own discipline.
We have people in-house whose only focus is the incorporation of these principles. We often are
hired specifically for these scopes as a standalone service.
You get the A-Team dedicated to your project.
As a benefit of our size we are able to assign our most senior leadership to work on your project.
Additionally the team has worked together as a cohesive unit for over 5 years.
100+ Years of Combined Global Experience with the exuberance, creativity and
nimbleness of a young firm.
Breaking the mold of the standard MEP firm we have something to prove and our approach to
building design and engineering is perfectly suited to projects which also seek to raise the bar.
We recognize the power and value of an integrated design approach.
With roots stemming from working at an integrated A/E firm we understand the benefits of working
collaboratively alongside the service providers outside our specialty. We currently have the benefit
of working in the same office as Halvorson and Partners Structural Engineers and often seek to
assemble complete building engineering teams for projects in this manner.

Collection of Meteorological Data
and Climate Analysis: Existing,
digital, meteorological time series
of hourly wind, temperature,
humidity, and solar radiation over
a typical meteorological year or
season, representative of the site
is collected and analyzed to
inform appropriate high
performance measures.
There are several ways to
optimize comfort and energy use
in buildings spaces. Some of
them are passive strategies
which do not require energy to
operate. Computer simulation is
performed and the predicted
environmental conditions of the
site are established, then
improvement strategies are
proposed and evaluated.
Where traditional MEP design
aspects are brought into the
discussion. Develop strategies to
enhance energy performance of
lighting, equipment, mechanical
and conditioning systems.
Suggest and design strategies
that will provide comfort to the
building users but at the same
time use the least amount of
energy to operate.
Dollar by dollar, building energy
use reduction strategies are more
efficient for reducing the carbon
emissions during the lifetime
operation of a facility. But when
feasible, we will propose and
engineer renewable energy
generation options for the
building that are fully integrated
with other systems.

26. UBPA NORTH. SHANGHAI, CHINA.
Architect: JAHN
The 47,870 m2 complex is composed of 2 elements: a 24m high, podium with retail, office and
other supporting facilities and an office tower, floating above it and reaching 80m at roof level
and 88.4m at the top of the architectural screen. The first step taken to create a high
performance icon was to develop an integrated building in which structural and mechanical
elements are part of the design. UBPA North is a building in which the balanced use of passive
and active measures to control the interior environment ensures the minimum material and
energy use in the construction and operation of the building, thus drastically reducing carbon
emissions.
