This document discusses key design principles - unity, variety, balance, scale and proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and simplicity - and provides examples of how each principle is demonstrated on the designs of different websites. Pinterest exemplifies unity through similarity, proximity and alignment. The Jim Carry website increases variety through different visual elements. Facebook achieves equal balance between the left and right sides. The scale and proportion of figures to boats is correctly portrayed on Bing. Flickr establishes a pattern that creates a sense of rhythmic movement. Wordpress offers direction through center placement and isolation. The simple Apple design maintains the iPad as the focal point.
