In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.
Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewers attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.
Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewers attention and to guide the viewers eye through and around the work of art.
Harmony in art is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. For instance: adjacent colors on the color wheel, similar shapes etc.
Movement is the path the viewers eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art. Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome Aalok Sonawala, Head of PMO, National Programmes, Rider Levett Bucknall on 26 February, to BAWA for our first face to face event of 2025. Aalok is a member of APMs Thames Valley Regional Network and also speaks to members of APMs PMO Interest Network, which aims to facilitate collaboration and learning, offer unbiased advice and guidance.
Tonight, Aalok planned to discuss the importance of a PMO within project-based organisations, the different types of PMO and their key elements, PMO governance and centres of excellence.
PMOs within an organisation can be centralised, hub and spoke with a central PMO with satellite PMOs globally, or embedded within projects. The appropriate structure will be determined by the specific business needs of the organisation. The PMO sits above PM delivery and the supply chain delivery teams.

- 2. Understanding Abstract Art DOMINANCE (Focus or Emphasis) Dominance gives a painting interest, counteracting confusion and monotony Most artists put the dominance a bit off center and balance it with some minor themes to maintain our interest
- 3. Understanding Abstract Art UNITY Relating the design elements to the idea being expressed in a painting reinforces the principal of unity. Unity in a painting also refers to the visual linking of various elements of the work.
- 4. Understanding Abstract Art BALANCE A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)
- 5. Understanding Abstract Art HARMONY Harmony in painting is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. eg.adjacent colors on the color wheel, similar shapes etc.
- 6. Understanding Abstract Art GRADATION Gradation of size and direction produce linear perspective. Gradation of color from warm to cool and tone from dark to light produce aerial perspective. Gradation can add interest and movement to a shape. A gradation from dark to light will cause the eye to move along a shape.
- 7. Understanding Abstract Art REPETITION Repeating shapes or other elements Repetiton with variation is interesting, without variation repetition can become monotonous
- 8. Understanding Abstract Art CHALLENGE Before your next Art Show, review the abstracts in your portfolio to find an example of each of these principles. Add interest by discussing one or two of these at your show. You may find that the Guest who thinks, My 3 year old could paint that. will have a better understanding of Abstract Art.
