3. Stages of life
Young, dependent, responsible student
Until 10 + 2
Young, semi-dependent, semi-responsible student
Now! For next 4 years!
Young, independent professional
After college!
Middle-aged Manager
Senior Leader
Old Man!
Youll go around, preaching! Like me!
4. What should you do?
Parents want you to study and score good marks
Teachers want you to study and score good marks,
university ranks
Necessary, but not sufficient!
LEARN
Studies will stop, learning shouldnt
Exams will end, assessments dont
5. Dont merely learn Engineering
Learn to be independent
Learn to work in teams
Learn to take decisions
Learn to make mistakes
Learn to learn from mistakes
Learn Compete, but collaborate
Learn to communicate
Knowledge (alone) doesnt get you a job or a seat in a great PG
Institute
English is critical
Use social media sensibly
And smart mobile phones too!
6. Dont expect teachers to teach!
They will
But, YOU should learn!
Dont think it is their responsibility to teach
It is your responsibility to learn
If I depended only on my teachers, I couldnt have entered IT field
at all
P.S.: My qualification is B.E. (Metallurgy)
7. Learn to enjoy
Not merely the gossip!
Or discussing the cute girl or handsome boy!
Do some small stupid mistakes!
This is the age for those!
Enjoy innovating / hacking!
Enjoy applying SET in the world around
My seniors allegedly blew transformer on the eve of exam! Stupid,
yet innovative application of knowledge!
Students of a city college designed and launched a satellite!
The next IC engine may be designed by you!
8. You are tomorrows professionals
Until then
Be child-like, dont be childish!
Make friends with seniors
Even if they rag you for a few days!
Respect your faculty
They know what they are talking about!
Learn to network
Your network is your asset too!
9. World is yours!
Go and conquer it!
Doesnt matter if you study Civil, Mech, EE, ECE or CS
My college mates include
An Oil Fire Fighting specialist
An offshore oil rig structural engineering assessor
Research scientists
Company owners / Businessmen
IT professionals
Professors
Running NGOs
World needs all skills, all professions
10. What matters is
What did you learn?
How well did you learn?
How well can you apply what you learnt?
How well can you showcase what you learnt?
How well do you enjoy these?
