 Age – 49

I chose this person because she is my role model
along with my father. Being a first generation
American she has exceeded expectations and
become very successful. She taught me that with
the right work ethic, I could accomplish whatever
I set my mind to. I also felt she would be a good
choice because she is one of six female managers
out of the 60 total managers that her work
employs.

My Perception of Silvia before the Interview is
that she is a very smart and successful woman. I
feel she is an adamant feminist because she is a
woman working in a company that employs
predominantly men. She is a role model because
she is driven, self-confident, hard-working, and
perseverant. I know that she has defied all odds to
be where she is in her career because she never
actually completed college. Other than that, I
don’t know much about her within her work
environment.

and why?

world over your lifetime in relation to

Have you ever felt discrimination because
of your gender in the workplace?

Do you feel as though you fit into the
“normal” gender roles and why?

You manage men and women in the workplace. Do
you treat them differently based on gender?

Have you ever seen men and women treated
differently in the workplace?

Do people have different perspectives of a tough
woman manager versus a tough man manager?

Although I’ve heard about discrimination against
women in the workplace, I never thought Silvia had
experienced it firsthand. This was a huge shock to me.
I’m not very surprised that she didn’t report the
person that did it. Some people would interpret this
as her being afraid of being viewed as a snitch by
men, but she used it to push herself harder and
achieve more. She also would never destroy
someone's career because of an errant comment. I also
believe that she made a great comment about men
and female managers. I believe that some men are
emasculated when they work under a woman
manager and use a derogatory term to justify why
they are holding a position of power.

In all of the places I’ve worked I have never seen
discrimination because of gender. This interview
has has given me a perspective of how
discrimination has affected a woman of an earlier
generation. Silvia made it clear that equal wages
have become more prevalent in today’s society.
According to Silvia, women are earning the same
wages as men that hold the same position, but
they are not holding nearly as many management
positions at her work. This shows that things are
getting better for women in the workplace, but I
don’t think they are where they need to be.
