The Cold War lasted from 1945 to 1990 and was a period of tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Their differing goals of self-determination versus security and capitalism versus communism led to the development of spheres of influence in Eastern Europe and satellite states controlled by the Soviet Union. This began an arms race and conflicts like the Korean War as the two superpowers sought to contain the spread of the other's ideology and strengthen their own political and economic systems. The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 brought the Cold War to its closest point to potential nuclear war.
