MDM provides functionality for application and content management, configuration settings management, and over-the-air software installation and firmware updates. It enables remote locking and wiping of lost or stolen devices. MDM solutions help reduce costs and security risks while minimizing device downtime through features like backup, restore, diagnostic and software management capabilities. The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) developed the OMA Device Management protocol as an open standard for provisioning and configuring mobile devices.
