Who
are we?
What are we up to?
Were inviting our communities into thoughtful conversation about the future of the Skeena
regionon the doorstep, and online.
Step1: To get things started, our volunteer door-knocking crew will fan out in our communities, ask a series of
seven questions on every doorstep (or just about), and invite people to become participants in skeena2050
which means, invite them to join in a growing conversation about our regions future.
Step 2: Next, our staff will follow up online, ask more questions about topics that rise to the surface, and
summarise and share results.
Step 3: And then? Well, its not decided yetwhich makes this perhaps the most interesting step of all.
We know that as skeena2050 builds momentum, doors will open: new knowledge and new relationships will
begin to emerge, alongside new ideas for taking the conversation forward.
Thus, our vision is to create a space where participants can bring their ideas to the table and develop step 3
together. Sure, its bold and ambitious; but its the right way to go.
How are we
coming together?
1. To spark thoughtful conversation
and listen
2. To learn
3. To build stronger networks
By way of
a shared agenda:
Why now?
Why this way?
We know that big change is coming to our region. Much of it is being driven from the outside, not by the people
who live hereyet we stand to be affected the most.
We know we have a right to influence decisions that shape our future. Yet many of us feel a sense of
disempowerment and inevitability, keeping us on the sidelines.
To bring our future back into our hands, we need to go out in our communities and listen
because when we listen, we give people a voice.
When people find
their voice, they
speak up and spark
conversation.
Genuine
conversations invite
learning and build
trust.
Trust is the
foundation for healthy
relationships and
healthy communities.
Healthy communities have
the power and the
resilience they need to
chart their own course.
This is why skeena2050 begins on the doorstep with a heartfelt invitation
to join a conversation, and be heard.
Where are we drawing our
resources from?
skeena2050 is a volunteer-enabled initiative. We could never dream of inviting every household
in our region into a conversation without the energy and time contributed by volunteers.
Every day, we hear from people who are concerned about the future of our region and searching for ways to
contribute their ideas. Recently, many of them have been walking into the SkeenaWild and SWCC offices and
asking: why dont you convene a regional dialogue? No-one else seems prepared to do it.
SkeenaWild and SWCC decided to step up as partners: they obtained grants enabling them to build infrastructure
for volunteers, and gradually and thoughtfully laid out a framework for the conversation.
As joint hosts of skeena2050, SkeenaWild and SWCC are committing to:
≒ Maintain skeena2050 as a protected, open space for conversation and learningseparate and distinct from
their other activities and mandates;
≒ Allow participants to lead the conversation and drive the development of step 3;
≒ Take in feedback and learn, so as to serve the community better, grow their networks, and strengthen their
relationships.
When do we start?
Our design phase begins
Thursday, April 3
Our test phase begins
Thursday, April 24
And our effort to reach every
doorstep in the Skeena begins
Thursday, May 8
and runs until
Saturday, June 14
