Daniella Violet describes how her taste in music has changed over time from childhood to the present. As a child, she was inspired by Avril Lavigne and enjoyed her empowering songs. In early teens, she discovered alternative rock bands like Paramore and Green Day. Currently, she is a huge fan of Owl City and enjoys how his music is poetic and represents the imaginative aspects of life. Overall, her taste has shifted from punk to alternative rock to now electronica, and music provides inspiration to her.
2. ChildhoodDuring my childhood I had many favourite artists, but
the most memorable is Avril Lavigne. When I was
younger she was really an inspiration, my favourite
songs used to be Sk8ter Boi, Complicated and Girlfriend.
I used to really like how she wasnt ‘girly’ and her songs
were powerful, with meaning. Although I don’t listen to
her music as much as I did then, whenever I hear any of
her songs, even her most recent onses, I feel nostalgic
as those songs were a large part of my childhood.
3. Early TeensDuring my early teen years I discovered alternative
rock/punk/grunge music and really it was all I listened to
for a couple years. I mainly listened to
Paramore, P!nk, Green Day and All Time Low. The song
I remember most id Damned If I do ya by All Time
Low, purely because I remember listening to it on repeat
for about 2 weeks. I now can’t stand the song. But I still
have all these artists on my playlist and I still listen to
them on occasion. From a very young age I remember
liking rock music and from then that didn’t change until
recently.
4. PresentNow my taste in music has changed dramatically. I’m a huge fan
of Owl City and all his side projects (Sky Saling, Port Blue). I own
all his albums and it’s basically all I listen to and it has been for
about a year. I like his music so much because it doesn’t make
sense, you have to work out what he is singing about. Also It
sounds more like poetry than music. Furthermore he writes his
own songs and plays a number of instruments. I find his music
represents the things in life we can’t actually see but we have to
imagine them and his music is always an inspiration. The one
song I particularly like is Captains of the Sky which he wrote as
Sky Sailing or Hot Air Balloon as Owl City as these songs I can
listen to all day and never get bored.
5. I’ve noticed that over the years my taste in music has
changed as I’ve grown older. From punk to alternative
rock and now electronica. I still listen to the older bands
but now I listen to music purely to enjoy it rather than
keeping up with trends, plus mainstream music is so
conventional and unimaginative, all the songs sound the
same and are very repetitive. Music means inspiration to
me.
