Recognize the House as
Historically Significant
The Brown House has been an integral part of the
History of Wildomar.
●
The house was built in 1886.
●
The community of Wildomar was established in
November of 1886.
●
The structure and two outbuildings are seen on the
map of Wildomar in 1887.
A portion of the map of 1887 includes the farmhouse
WHS Presentation June 2016
●
During the Board of Supervisors 11-5-2005 meeting of
approval for the Grand site project, it was noted that
Beazer and the Wildomar Historical Society worked out an
agreement to help with relocation costs and relocation
options, “To provide something terrific for the community,”
Tony Delgripo from Beazer.
●
The site is listed on the Historic Resources Inventory and
the house and outbuildings should be protected.
●
The Brown House was never temporarily being stored on
the property. Just as it is now in the plan, it was always
going to be a key feature of the development for the benefit
of the community.

More to the Story
Appendix F-9
History: Left off the contributions of David A. Brown who
continued to serve the community of Wildomar, was
instrumental in getting infrastructure built here, and was
known as “Mr. Wildomar”. David A. Brown is a continuation of
the Brown family and therefore should be included in the
summary.
More to the Story
Conclusion from study: Because the design, materials, and
workmanship of the farmhouse have been physically
compromised through room additions, porch enclosures, and
other alterations, the dwelling no longer reflects the Folk
Victorian style sufficiently enough to convey its architectural
significance adequately.
That conflicts with the information in the 1990 report
Appendix F-3 which states: The house interior has been
extensively altered, however, positions and size of rooms have
remained intact.
The site is listed on the Historic Resources Inventory and the
house and outbuildings should be protected.
More to the Story
Continued reading from page 26 of the Appendix F-7 which the
conclusion references: Under California Register criteria,
however, the subject property retains enough of its historic
character and appearance to be recognized as a historic
resource. Consequently, the subject property appears eligible
for California Register listing under criteria related to
exemplifying the broad patterns of California's history and
cultural heritage at the local level.
Furthermore in the next paragraph: Research reveals that
subjects property's association with Rudolph J. Brown is of
sufficient local importance to appear eligible for California
Register listing.
California Register of Historical Resources
In order for a resource to be designated a historical landmark through the California
Register of Historical Resources, it must meet the following criteria:
●
Associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad
patterns of local or regional history or the cultural heritage of California or the
United States (Criterion 1).
?
California became 31st state in 1850
?
After the Civil War ended in 1865, there was another great movement west
promoted by the Homestead Act
?
Transcontinental movement west. Arrived in San Francisco in 1869
?
Railroad was built from the south through Wildomar in 1885
?
Wildomar was established in 1886
?
Oscar Brown became one of the first prominent pioneer families
California Register of Historical Resources
In order for a resource to be designated a historical landmark through the California
Register of Historical Resources, it must meet the following criteria:
●
Associated with the lives of persons important to local, California or national
history (Criterion 2).
?
Thomas Study – page iii Management Summary: An architectural and historical
analysis of the complex indicated that it did not appear eligible for the CRHR
under Criteria A and C. However, due to its historic connection with the Brown
family, it does appear eligible for the CRHR at the local level under Criterion B.
?
Thomas Study – page 14: In Consideration of Criterion B, it may be observed
that the Brown family were pioneering farmers and ranchers of the area and
they are recognized as a locally prominent family. Furthermore, the study area
has been farmed for at least 60 years by the Brown family. Therefore, the
Brown Ranch complex appears eligible for the CRHR at the local level under
Criterion B and merits special consideration in local planning.
California Register of Historical Resources
In order for a resource to be designated a historical landmark through the California
Register of Historical Resources, it must meet the following criteria:
●
Associated with the lives of persons important to local, California or national
history (Criterion 2). continued . . .
?
Appendix F-7 Historic Resources Assessment Report Page 25: Although Brown
fails to achieve a level of local, regional, or national prominence necessary to
meet National Register criteria, under California Register criteria, the subjects
property's association with Rudolph J. Brown during the Brown's long tenure as
a Wildomar farmer, landowner, and prominent citizen is of sufficient local
importance to appear eligible for California Register listing.
California Register of Historical Resources
In order for a resource to be designated a historical landmark through the California
Register of Historical Resources, it must meet the following criteria:
●
Embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, region or method of
construction or represents the work of a master or possesses high artistic
values (Criterion 3).
?
Considering the resurgence in the popularity of restoring, preserving and
protecting farmhouses a new study could find that the dwelling does indeed
reflect and would qualify for Criterion 3 (CHRH) because it embodies the
distinctive characteristics of a type, period. Agrarian Period (1866-1920)
?
(Excerpt from Builder.com: 3-5-2016: Farmhouses have always been a
quintessential part of the American dream: a symbol of open space and land to
call one’s own. The style has endured in rural areas, the suburbs, and even the city,
but now it’s seeing a resurgence —and being refreshed. Modern farmhouses blend
simple lines and an agrarian sensibility with contemporary styling. Think of them
as a new twist on a trusted American vernacular.)
California Register of Historical Resources
In order for a resource to be designated a historical landmark through the California
Register of Historical Resources, it must meet the following criteria:
●
Has yielded, or has the potential to yield, information important to the
prehistory or history of the local area, California or the nation (Criterion 4).
?
The Brown House has the potential to yield information about the history of the
local area. The Wildomar Historical Society has documentation on weather
patterns, letters, documentation subject to importance to the community to
share. The house itself will yield information about how electricity flows, how
water was pumped from the ground, how construction of the past differs from
today's standards.
?
The potential is endless.
●
The Wildomar Historical Society is in favor
of the project with the recognition of the
historic value of the house.
●
The Brown House qualifies as historically
significant to California and locally.
●
The Brown House was a prominent feature
of the prior development and has a place
set aside in the current development. With
hopes of it being, “Something terrific for
the community.”
