This document discusses reasons why people may help or not help others in different situations. It begins with stories of heroes who sacrificed themselves to help others on 9/11, while also mentioning the bystander effect where many ignored a murder. It then outlines factors like the situation, personal traits, and psychology that influence helping behavior. Specifically, it discusses how pluralistic ignorance, diffusion of responsibility, and cost-benefit analysis impact decisions based on the scenario. Personal characteristics like agreeableness are also cited. Kin selection, egoistic and altruistic motivations from a psychological perspective are explored. The document concludes with interview results on reasons people may help like feeling happy, or not help like lack of appreciation.

5. So why people sometimes can be like the
heroes of 911 event , but sometimes act like the
bystanders who totally ignore the murder of
Kitty Genovese ?
6. 1.0 The scenarios / situations of scene affect helpers decision
a) Pluralistic Ignorance - People decide what to do by looking to others
Bystanders wait for the
action of others to decide
what to do in an
ambiguous situation
However, those others
dont take any actions and
dont have any ideas what
to do like below comic.
7. b) Diffusion of Responsibility the tendency for us to not help someone in need
when there are other people present because of our belief that someone else will offer
assistance. It also reflects that personal responsibility would not fall solely on the shoulder
of bystander when others are present

Good morning everyone , today I am going to do a presentation about why do people help and why people sometimes dont help
So this is the outline, in the beginning I will do an introduction by telling you the story, and the following part is the content page which I will explain the reason why people help and not help.
The most evident example of people helping others is the heroes of September 11, 2001 lost their lives while helping others at the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon which were hit by the planes. One of the head of security of morgan Stanley scarified himself for saving the lives fo three thousand seven hundred employees in this tragedy. He guide his employees with yelling same instruction repeatedly when the plane hit the tower, after most employee left the building , he made final inspection to ensure nobody was left behind, but unfortunately his bound was found in the collapsed building in the end. So it looks quite touching when people helping each other.
But there is another shocking story that raised concern of the society in worldwide which is the tragic murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 . She was brutally attacked by a knife wielding man on her way home from work. . So actually in the end of the story, kitty Genovese was dead because of no people come to help her.
Then another shocking case which raised concern of the society in worldwide is the tragic murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 . She was brutally attacked by a knife wielding man on her way home from work. . So actually in the end of the story, kitty Genovese was dead because of no people come to help her.
So according to the research based on the psychology theory, the first factor to affect helpers decision is the scenarios or the situation of the scene, pluralistic ignorance is one of the example , it describe that people decide what to do by looking to others. For example , bystanders may wait for the action of others to decide what to do in an ambiguous situation. However, those others also dont take any actions and dont have any ideas what to do. Eventually, this phenomenon leads people tend to less giving help.
The second example is the diffusion of responsibility , it describes the tendency for us to not help someone in need when there are other people present because of our belief that someone else will offer assistances. It is also reflects that the personal responsibility would not fall solely on the shoulder of bystander when others are present. As you can see in this comic, most of them thought others will help , so they just ignore to give help.
The third example is the costs and benefits for helping. If you look at this table, if the benefit of helping is high , cost of helping is low , then sure will directly help . If benefits of helping is low , cost of helping is high , then it is common sense people will reject to help. For example, lending a friend a, the cost is not really high , so you will still lend him the book. If lending a friend 10 thousand ringgit, the cost is very high , so people will probably reject to help in this case.
The second factor to affect people to help or not is the personal characteristic / traits of one person, psychologist conclude that person with high agreeableness are usually generous, sympathetic and helpful , therefore they are more willing to help out with everything anytime
The third factor to affect people to help or not is the psychology phenomenon , the first example is the kin selection , which describe that people will exhibit preferences for helping blood relatives because this will increase the odds that their genes will be transmitted to subsequent generation.
The following example is egoistic motivation and altruistic motivation, as you can see from this picture, egoist wants a return for offering help but altruist help others without expecting anything in return. When this egoist saw this poor guy, he wants to help him actually to make himself feeling better, while altruist saw this poor guy, she wants to help him to make him feel better.
And come to the last is the interview results from my friends, the first one is they think can increase the productivity at work, so actually is same to group work. Second result, is they simple feel helping makes people feel happy and good. And the third result is , because society tell people to help . People think that it is an obligation to help others because society expects it
Then the interview result of why people reject to help is because they think never ever to offer to help anything for free , If helping others doesnt make them happy, then they will simply refuse to help.
and second one is they refuse to help for people because sometimes people dont appreciate it but blame it
And third result people reject to help is when you cannot put 100% into it sometimes kindness can turn into hurting people too in some cases.
