WHY IS PDHPE SO
IMPORTANT IN OUR
SCHOOLS?
Miss Wever. 3W
It can be estimated that roughly 1 in 4 children within
Australia are over weight. By teaching kids about health
and nutrition we can attempt to lower these numbers.
It is important that children have an understanding of how
their body works and what we need to do to keep their
bodies fit and healthy.
It is recommended by the Department of Health that
children between the ages of 5 and 12 are physically
active for a minimum of 60 minutes a day. PDHPE as a
subject can educate children on fun ways to achieve this.
From 1985 to 1995 the number of overweight 715 year
olds almost doubled.
The rate of obesity is expected to rise as time goes on. By
2020 it is expected that 65% of young Australians will be
over weight or obese.
THE FACTS: OBESITY
By participating in sporting activities it helps the
children understand how to work together to achieve a
goal.
Helps children to understand winning and loosing
Children who participate in team sports are less likely
to feel isolated.
Satisfying for the parents to know that their child is
participating in sporting activities.
THE FACTS:
SPORT PARTICIPATION
Children dont only learn about their bodies within
PDHPE. They are also taught about how to live
their lives safely.
This includes drug education. It is important that
children know what drugs are and the effects they
can have on you.
Children are taught about road safety and stranger
danger.
Children are also taught about the effects of
bullying and how to deal with bullying if it is
occurring.
It is important that all these values and ideas are
taught from a young age to prevent harm in any
way.
THE FACTS:
SAFE LIVING
It is very important that we educate our children
on all aspects that are included in the PDHPE
syllabus.
It prepares our children for real life experiences
and prevents many from harm or dangerous
situations.
It is important that parents are encouraging
enthusiasm about the subject.
There is a lack of support regarding the subject of
PDHPE, from parents, students, teachers and the
school system. This needs to be changed...
