5. What is an OH&S Management
System?
An Occupational Health & Safety Management
System, or OH&S Management System, defines the
framework in which the organization cares for the
occupational health and safety of its employees
It represents a set of rules, policies, processes, plans
and practices for preventing occupational health and
safety hazards, minimizes risks in the workplace, and
is unique for every organization

6. The PDCA approach
The Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) cycle can simply be
described as:
Plan: Establish the objectives and processes
necessary to deliver results in accordance with the
organizations OH&S Policy
Do: Implement the above
Check: Monitor and measure the process against the
OH&S Policy, objectives, and legal requirements, and
report results
Act: Take action to continually improve performance

7. Health & Safety policy
The OH&S Policy emphasizes the overall intentions and
direction of how the company will relate to
occupational health and safety.
The statement comes from top management, and is
a primary directive for how every individual in the
company will perform their jobs in relation to
occupational health and safety
The OH&S Policy displays the commitments our
company makes to control and improve OH&S

8. Health & Safety objectives
OH&S objectives, and the plans designed to meet those
objectives, are critical to the success of the systems
performance and can have a direct bearing on the
welfare of the workforce.
It is critical that both the objectives and plans are
well thought out, that they consider all parties and
stakeholders, and are designed to lessen the risk for
the workforce
Objectives are intended to be S.M.A.R.T.
