Plants are vital to all life on Earth by providing food, water, oxygen, habitat, and medicine. They are directly or indirectly the source of all human food and have been used for food throughout history. Plants also regulate the water cycle, help distribute and purify water, and move water from soil to atmosphere through transpiration. Additionally, they produce oxygen through photosynthesis and make up the backbone of all habitats by providing food and shelter for other wildlife. Around one-quarter of prescription drugs come from plants or are plant-based derivatives, and four out of five people rely on plants for primary health care.
