Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hi, Thank you to Mindy for initiating a series of webcasts for FCS. I look forward to participating on a regular basis because educators have so much to share with each other. Just to let you know a little about me, I have always been interested in technology as means to improve communication. I attended the very first podcamp held in New York City and then Atlanta. At one time the buzzword was podcasting. In 8 years the landscape has changed and the rapid acceptance of mobile technology has made it possible for anyone to podcast with the click of an upload button. I started at Creek View as a computer lab assistant 10 years ago. I used to train people on computers back in the days when they actually had to learn a little code. It was a painful process and there was a lot of resistance. Why? Because it didn’t make life a whole lot easier. Fortunately, those days are behind us and many innovations have evolved and become easier to use and apply in the classroom. Wikis are one such animal so let’s get started. I know you are all planning to walk away from this session as newly dubbed wiki experts ready to implement your first lesson on social responsibility on the web tomorrow. So let’s get on with Part II of Wikis in a Wink!
  • #3: Teachers are very industrious, hardworking and always looking for more effective ways to communicate and inspire learners.
  • #4: The web can be an ominous place replete with opportunity and fraught with frustration. Have you ever felt this way?
  • #5: I’m interested to know what parts of the county you’re from and would like you to try out the whiteboard tools available on this screen. Just choose an icon, text tool or marker and share a close proximity of your location. Thank you! I saw this on a recent elluminate session and thought it was a great idea. If you agree, click on the little clapping hand next to your name in the viewer list.
  • #7: Who do you look up to? Since the last session, some of you have blazed a path of exploration and I’m certain many of you have established your own personal mentor-wiki sites. They seem to have great structure and form. Somehow you hope to emulate this work in your own wiki. Please share some of your favorites in the chat and let us know one thing you really love about it.
  • #8: Ok, time to explore some of these destinations together and find out how they manage to make it look so easy! WEB TOUR/Desktop Share
  • #9: This picture makes me think about fireflies, fireworks and the limitless potential of individual ideas all gathered together to shed light on a subject.
  • #10: At this point, let’s see if anyone out there would like to take the mic and ask some specific questions.
  • #11: Let’s list the issues we feel are most prickly about using a wiki?
  • #12: Think about your audience, what is their motivation? What is your role as the facilitator of the overall experience? How are these expectations constantly changing?
  • #13: You desire to have every student illuminating the web with their sense of wonder. Developing web communications skills is an imperative and you can play a crucial role is developing citizens of the future by providing a garden seeded with unique learning opportunities.
  • #14: Set a good example. Share with others. Take it to the web. Tweet about it! Celebrate every little success. Good luck!
  • #15: Thank you to Mindy for hosting another wonderful elluminate session. I’m sure she will let you know where you can review the recording in case you need a refresher. I look forward to speaking with you in the future. In the meantime. Please contact me with any questions. I would love to hear from you and follow your own wiki progress.
