WiLS will separate from UW-Madison on June 30th but will continue providing services. The organization will change its location, size, services offered, and business model. However, it will still fulfill its core mission of supporting libraries after the separation from the university. Webinars are scheduled in February to discuss the new business model.
11. Yes, we will still exist and provide
services after June 30 when we
formally separate from UW-
Madison
Editor's Notes
I want to start this presentation with the most important thing for you to know. We will be here, and we will still be providing services.
Lets start by talking about what will be different
We will be moving out of UW Madison Memorial Library, and off of the UW-Madison campus.I cant say too much about what were thinking for a new location yet, but I expect to be able to soon.
We will be a smaller organization. I like to think of it as lean and mean and more flexible to allow for evolving service to our members. Again, I cant say much about this yet, but expect to have more information very soon about number of positions.Ive had some questions about existing staff, so I do want to mention tha. Because there will be fewer positions in the new WiLS, and because the organization will be different, there wont be a one-to-one match of any position, and all staff will have to apply for the new positions.
As a beginning step in this process, we had a service review process. We had an independent person (Kathy Pletcher, retired director of the UW Green Bay Cofrin Library) work with focus groups and some survey data to look at what services we were currently providing, what was valuable to members, what was not, and what their needs might be in the future. Based on those results, some service directions were proposed to the board in November. I will not go into detail here, but more information can be found in the board notes.I did want to mention, though, that the most valued service for our members was cooperative purchasing. We will absolutely continue to provide group purchasing services and database subscription managementexactly how we provide that and what the service looks like will most likely change. So, the service directions have been morphing over the last month as weve been working on our business model. The way we charge for things will absolutely be changing. Unfortunately, the timing is such that I cant share specific information quite yet. But
After the board meeting on January 18th, there will be two webinars for members to hear about and give feedback on the proposed directions and business model. If you are interest in this level of conversation, Id encourage you to attend. Otherwise, there will be lots of information posted to our website and Facebook as the reorganization progresses (see the last slide for more information)
The last thing that I wanted to mention that may be different is our name and branding. Were discussing this internally and with the board and well keep you postedbut just wanted to let you know so it isnt a surprise.
Thats a lot of 界鞄温稼乙艶so what will be the same?
You know the saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same This is true for WiLS, too. WiLShas been bringing libraries together to solve problems and to share resources for over 40 years. As weve been going through this reorganization, Ive been thinking a lot about the purpose of WiLS and where were headed and I keep coming back to that same place: we bring libraries of all types together to solve problems, to make libraries stronger, to help move all of us forward to whatever is coming next. Thats exciting, and were looking forward to providing services to you all into the future.
So, Im going to leave you where we started: Yes, we will still exist July 1st. I hope this gave you a better idea of where we are now and what our next steps are in this reorganization.
